Russia’s National Guard reintroduces tanks in strategic arsenal expansion

The Russian National Guard Troops has officially reestablished tank units within its ranks as part of a broader modernization and expansion of its heavy weapons arsenal, Director Viktor Zolotov confirmed.

The announcement follows large-scale internal exercises held in Russia’s Ryazan region, during which the National Guard Troops showcased enhanced artillery and armored capabilities, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.

According to a statement by the National Guard, the decision to reintroduce tank formations reflects the evolving nature of the force’s operational requirements.

“The head of the department noted that, due to the expansion of the range of ‘heavy’ weapons used by the troops, tank units have been recreated within the Russian Guard, and the firepower of the artillery has also increased significantly,” the statement read.

Zolotov added that over the past two years, the agency has undertaken an extensive effort to develop its artillery forces. As part of this initiative, the National Guard has, for the first time, integrated various heavy weapon systems into its arsenal—including tanks, anti-tank guns, self-propelled artillery, and multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS).
