Russia's Ryazan governor declares mourning after factory blaze

The governor of Russia’s Ryazan region, Pavel Malkov, announced on August 16 via his Telegram channel that August 18 has been declared a day of mourning in response to the tragic events in the Shilovsky District.

“In connection with the tragic events in Shilovsky District, August 18 is a day of mourning in the Ryazan Region. I share the grief of all affected by this terrible tragedy, offer my heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased, and wish a speedy recovery to those injured,” Malkov stated.

Flags across the region will be flown at half-mast. Cultural institutions, TV and radio broadcasters, and other organisations have been asked to cancel entertainment events. The governor also assured that full support would be provided to the families of the victims and those injured.

The tragedy occurred on August 15 when a fire broke out at a factory in the village of Lesnoy, Shilovsky District, claiming 11 lives. Medical aid was administered to 130 people, 29 of whom were hospitalised: 13 patients remain in Ryazan hospitals, while 16 were transferred to federal medical centres in Moscow.

Approximately 360 specialists and over 90 units of equipment from the Ministry of Emergency Situations and the Russian Guard are involved in responding to the aftermath of the fire.

By gubernatorial order, a state of emergency was declared in the Shilovsky municipal district on August 15 at 7:00 p.m. and will continue until further notice. An emergency response headquarters has been established, with all relevant departments and services actively engaged in handling the situation.
