Russia sets sights on expanding space program with focus on nuclear technologies

31 March 2025 16:14

Russia is set to expand its space program with a strong emphasis on nuclear technologies, said Dmitry Bakanov, the director general of the state corporation Roscosmos.

In a recent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Bakanov outlined key areas of focus for the country’s ambitious space endeavors, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media.

Bakanov stated that the national space project would encompass the development of Russia’s orbital constellation, which will be vital for providing core services such as communication, Earth remote sensing, and navigation. The program will also prioritize the growth of the country's launch capabilities, including the entire family of Russian rockets, as well as the development of new cosmodromes.

In addition to these efforts, the project will include a dedicated focus on scientific space research, manned space exploration, and a specific nuclear space program, reflecting Russia’s increasing interest in nuclear technologies for space exploration.

This expansion aligns with Russia’s long-term strategy to enhance its space infrastructure and maintain a competitive position in global space exploration. The inclusion of nuclear technologies is expected to provide significant advancements, particularly in propulsion systems, which could allow for more ambitious missions beyond Earth's orbit.

As part of this plan, Russia aims to strengthen its position in the global space industry, ensuring that the country remains at the forefront of technological advancements and continues to play a significant role in international space exploration efforts.
