Russia unveils AI-powered drone system for security firms PHOTO/VIDEO

24 April 2026 14:30

Interceptor drones designed to protect civilian infrastructure are set to be deployed in Russia, with the system named Varvar.

The interceptor drones are initially expected to be supplied to private security companies, Mash reports.

The drones, named Varvar, weigh 3 kg. They have an automatic target acquisition range of up to 250 metres, while their maximum flight altitude and range reach up to 2,000 metres. Flight time is up to five minutes, and their speed reaches up to 250 km/h.

The system is described as highly simple to operate. An operator is required only to launch the interceptor drone, after which an AI model takes over—detecting the target, guiding the drone, and carrying out interception in autonomous mode.

It is expected that such systems will become part of the protection of key facilities guarded by private security firms. A draft law expanding the powers of security companies to protect critical infrastructure from UAVs is currently under consideration in the State Duma.
