Russia warns EU of “mirror” response over diplomatic restrictions

08 October 2025 14:00

Russia has threatened to respond in kind if the European Union imposes restrictions on the movement of Russian diplomats across its member states.

Speaking to journalists, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said Moscow would introduce reciprocal measures against representatives of “hostile countries” should such travel limitations be implemented, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.

“They need to understand that every step will be met with a mirror response,” Ryabkov said. “If they impose any travel restrictions, we will apply corresponding limitations here to those taking part in such actions, if it comes to that.”

He questioned the rationale behind potential EU restrictions, adding: “I do not understand why this is needed, who gains from it.”

Ryabkov also criticised those in the EU who have reportedly been considering limits on Russian diplomats, saying they were running out of ideas.

“They no longer know how to twist this,” he said. “We will manage without their permissions or prohibitions. In the grand scheme of things, this has little relevance to real life.”

Russian diplomats will now be required to notify the host country before travelling to third countries. The proposed rules, the FT notes, would oblige Russian diplomats stationed in EU capitals to “inform other governments of their travel plans before crossing the border of the host country.”

The initiative, promoted by the Czech Republic, forms “part of the new [19th] package of anti-Russian sanctions being developed in Brussels.” Unanimous approval is required for the package to be adopted, with Hungary reportedly the last EU country to lift its veto, the publication adds.
