Russia warns of long-term environmental damage after attacks on Tehran oil facilities

Russia has warned that recent attacks on oil storage facilities in Tehran by the United States and Israel could cause long-term environmental damage.

At a briefing, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that on March 7, US and Israeli forces bombed and set fire to three oil storage facilities in Tehran and its suburbs. She noted that the attacks released a large amount of harmful hydrocarbon compounds, as well as sulphur and nitrogen oxides, into the atmosphere, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.

Zakharova highlighted that oil had entered Tehran’s sewage system, spreading across the city, and that acid rain had been observed, exposing millions of residents to toxic conditions. She emphasised that the chemical contamination would have prolonged negative effects on the city’s water, air, food supply, flora, and fauna.

The Russian diplomat described the environmental impact as severe and lasting, stressing the potential for widespread ecological consequences from the attacks.
