Russia welcomes US–Iran memorandum, praises mediation efforts

18 June 2026 14:39

Moscow has welcomed the agreement reached between Washington and Tehran to resolve their military conflict, according to an official statement issued by Russia’s Foreign Ministry.

“We welcome the agreement on ending the military conflict between the United States and Iran, which was confirmed remotely by the presidents of the two countries — Donald Trump and Masoud Pezeshkian,” the ministry said.

“We note the firm mutual commitment demonstrated by Washington and Tehran to strictly adhere to the terms of the signed memorandum of understanding. We also commend the energetic and effective efforts of Pakistani and Qatari mediators aimed at resolving existing differences through negotiations,” the Foreign Ministry added.

The US and Iran signed a 14-point Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on June 17, 2026, as an interim framework to halt their recent military conflict.

This non-final agreement extends a ceasefire for 60 days (including on fronts like Lebanon), mandates reopening the Strait of Hormuz for unrestricted commercial shipping, and outlines commitments such as Iran forgoing nuclear weapons development under IAEA oversight, while initiating talks on sanctions relief, reconstruction funding, and other issues.

It was initially negotiated with help from Pakistani and Qatari mediators, with digital/electronic signings involving officials like JD Vance and later hard-copy signings by Presidents Trump and Pezeshkian.
