Russian billionaire Suleimanov to remain in pretrial detention

Russian billionaire Ibragim Suleimanov will remain in pretrial detention after the Moscow City Court rejected an appeal by his defence against his arrest, a Kommersant correspondent reported from the courtroom on September 25.

At the hearing, Suleimanov’s lawyers presented information about a serious illness that they said prevented him from being held in a pretrial detention centre. His lawyer argued that the court had failed to take his medical condition into account when ordering his arrest.

Suleimanov was detained in October 2024. Investigators allege that the billionaire was involved in the 1999 killing of Gennady Borisov, chairman of the trade union committee representing ground-service employees of Vnukovo Airlines.

Another charge concerns the 2004 killing of Georgy Tal, a former head of the Federal Service for Financial Rehabilitation and Bankruptcy. Suleimanov is also accused of involvement in the attempted killing of lawyer Ilya Peregudov in 2021.

Suleimanov denies the charges.
