Russian deputy PM says no side wants Armenia to leave EAEU

22 May 2026 16:21

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk said that neither Moscow nor Yerevan wants Armenia to leave the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), as discussions continue over Armenia’s long-term geopolitical and economic orientation.

Speaking in an interview with “Vesti” during a Russian delegation visit to Ashgabat, Overchuk described the situation as unusual, stressing that both sides support Armenia’s continued membership.

“You know, the situation is very strange and unusual because no one wants Armenia to leave the EAEU, and Armenian leaders also state that they do not want to leave the EAEU,” Overchuk noted.

He added that Russia favours Armenia’s continued participation in the bloc and its economic development within the union framework.

“We are in favour of Armenia staying in the EAEU and prospering, and continuing to develop at the same pace as it has in recent years while in the EAEU,” the deputy prime minister said.

His comments come amid ongoing political debate in Armenia over its foreign policy direction, particularly its growing engagement with the European Union alongside continued membership in the EAEU.

Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan previously said that Armenia benefits economically from its EAEU membership but is also pursuing closer ties with the EU.

He also noted that any discussion of withdrawal would require a formal request from Yerevan.

“Armenia’s current leaders have made a political decision to move closer to the European Union and to seek accession to the European Union, so why should they continue to enjoy the economic advantages and benefits that Armenia derives from its membership in the Eurasian Economic Union?” he asked.
