Russian FM accuses Kyiv, Europe of repeatedly breaking ceasefires
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov commented on the ongoing situation in Ukraine, stating that the ceasefire has been announced multiple times since 2014, yet each time it has been broken by Kyiv with the support of Europe.
Lavrov referred to various ceasefire agreements, such as the Minsk Agreements and those made in Istanbul, as examples of promises that were repeatedly broken. He emphasized that despite the declarations of ceasefire, Russia was repeatedly misled by Ukrainian officials and their European partners, Caliber.Az reports per Rusian media.
“A temporary ceasefire, as the whole history since 2014 shows, has been announced more than once. These are the Minsk agreements, the agreements that were destroyed by the 2014 putsch, and the agreements in Istanbul. All of these have been paired with the declaration of a ceasefire. "Each time after these agreements, it turned out that we had been misled," Lavrov stated.
He expressed Russia’s desire for a stable, permanent peace, based on addressing the root causes of the conflict in Ukraine.
Lavrov also commented on recent diplomatic efforts, specifically regarding talks between the US and Ukraine in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on March 11. A joint statement following the meeting revealed that Ukraine agreed to a 30-day ceasefire and the signing of a minerals agreement with the US, with Washington pledging to resume military and intelligence support for Ukraine.
Despite these discussions, Lavrov suggested that Russia was not interested in Europe’s role in the peace process, stating plainly that he had no interest in the EU's position.
When asked about the EU’s stance on the ongoing conflict, Lavrov replied, "I am not interested in their position, honestly. Since some time now, I am not interested at all."
