Russian FM stresses diplomatic resolution in talks with Iranian counterpart
On February 28, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov spoke by telephone with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi at the initiative of Tehran, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported.
During the call, Araghchi briefed Lavrov on Iran’s measures to counter what he described as aggression by the United States and Israel, which, according to him, had disrupted negotiations on a peaceful settlement of the Iranian nuclear programme. He also outlined plans to urgently convene the UN Security Council, Caliber.Az reports per Russian Foreign Ministry.
Lavrov condemned the attacks, calling them unprovoked, and stressed the need for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a return to political and diplomatic channels. He reaffirmed Russia’s readiness to assist in pursuing a peaceful resolution, including through the UN Security Council, based on international law and a balanced consideration of interests.
The Iranian side expressed its appreciation for Russia’s support amid the escalating regional tensions.
