Russian FM: US has yet to decide on supplying Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine

30 September 2025 16:32

In Moscow, Russian officials continue to operate under the assumption that the United States has not yet made a decision regarding the potential supply of Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov addressed the issue during media questions following the 22nd annual meeting of the International Valdai Discussion Club, telling reporters:

“I don’t think we are already dealing with a made decision.”

Lavrov suggested that public statements on the matter are largely influenced by external pressure, noting:

“These statements are primarily the result of Europe pressuring Washington. Washington wants to show that it is taking into account the opinions of its allies.”

The minister also downplayed the potential military impact of the missiles, stating:

“If they are sent to Ukraine, this will not change the military situation. If they believe that Ukraine is a responsible state that will use them responsibly, that would be surprising to me.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly called on the US to provide Tomahawk cruise missiles, capable of striking targets at ranges between 900 and 1,500 miles, a request he reiterated during his recent visit to New York.

Senior American and European officials, cited by the Wall Street Journal, indicate that the Trump administration is currently considering whether to supply the Tomahawks along with other long-range weapons. However, Washington has not yet issued a formal response.

Ukraine has consistently sought Tomahawk missiles over the past year, including them in its official weapons request list several months ago. The proposal had previously been rejected under former US President Joe Biden, as the missiles were part of Zelenskyy’s 10-point Plan for Victory.

At the time, the Biden administration assessed that supplying missiles capable of reaching Moscow would carry too high a risk of escalating the conflict.
