Russian Foreign Ministry calls for serious climate discussions at COP29 in Azerbaijan
Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, emphasized the need for substantive discussions at the upcoming COP29 climate conference in Azerbaijan.
Speaking to Azerbaijani journalists during the CIS Council of Foreign Ministers meeting in Moscow, she expressed concern over the politicization of climate issues, noting that the agenda has become a platform for manipulation and misinformation, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
Zakharova highlighted the universal importance of climate change, which affects fundamental aspects of life such as the environment, water, and air quality. She criticized the inconsistent actions of some nations regarding climate agreements, pointing to their tendency to sign documents only to later withdraw or flip-flop on commitments.
Citing the case of environmental activist Greta Thunberg, Zakharova argued that individuals and movements should not be used as political tools. She stressed that COP29 should foster serious and genuine dialogue, urging that environmental concerns should not be co-opted by those lacking sincerity in addressing the issues at hand.
