Russian functional fitness champion killed in suspected jealousy shooting
Dmitry Isaev, a Russian champion in functional fitness, was shot dead with a hunting rifle in the city of Kaluga, authorities and sports officials said.
The incident took place on the night of May 7. According to a preliminary version of events, cited by Russian media, the former boyfriend of Isaev’s girlfriend, allegedly motivated by jealousy, fired multiple shots at the athlete. Isaev died at the scene from his injuries.
In a statement, the organisation said: “He was not just a champion, but a true friend and mentor to many”.
Isaev was also a candidate for the Master of Sports in Artistic Gymnastics. He had worked for many years as a personal trainer and regularly took part in competitions.
The Functional Fitness Federation of Russia and the club he represented expressed condolences to his family and loved ones. A fundraising campaign has been launched to cover funeral expenses.
Functional Fitness is a discipline in which athletes perform continuous sequences of multi-joint, high-intensity exercises using both external weights and their own body weight.
