Russian-held town in eastern Ukraine equips buses with drone jammers
Authorities in the Russian-controlled eastern Ukrainian town of Horlivka have taken precautionary measures to safeguard local buses from drone strikes by installing jamming devices.
This decision follows a recent incident where a Ukrainian drone attacked a bus in the area, resulting in injuries to three individuals, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
Horlivka, situated near the Russian-held city of Donetsk, has become increasingly vulnerable to aerial attacks, prompting local officials to seek assistance.
Vladimir Mironov, the owner and manager of a bus depot in Horlivka, stated, "We cannot protect bus drivers and passengers ourselves, so we requested help and they gave us four jamming devices."
He acknowledged uncertainty about the effectiveness of the devices but emphasized that it represents the best possible security measure for the time being.
Jamming devices work by disrupting the communications between drones and their operators, thereby reducing the threat they pose. However, instances of drones crashing have also led to significant damage during the ongoing conflict.
The situation in Horlivka is precarious, with local authorities frequently reporting shelling and drone attacks. Donetsk, which has been under Russian control since 2014, continues to face artillery fire as Ukrainian troops maintain positions on its outskirts.
