Russian official: Armenians will oust Pashinyan over EU gas prices

23 May 2026 13:31

Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council Dmitry Medvedev has claimed that the population of Armenia could force Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan out of office if the country transitions to European-level gas prices.

Writing on the social media platform VK, Medvedev delivered a sharply worded critique of Pashinyan’s policies, particularly his attempts to balance closer ties with the European Union while retaining the economic advantages of membership in the Eurasian Economic Union.

“As is well known, someone who tries to sit between two chairs risks landing painfully right on their flabby backside.

This, apparently, is exactly what a certain little man nicknamed Nikol is preparing to do in the near future. He is persistently dragging his ‘superpower’ into the European Union, while trying to preserve all the benefits of participation in the Eurasian Economic Union.

Moreover, emboldened by conversations with Trumps and Macrons, the Caucasian reformer has gone so far as to claim that under any circumstances, Russia is obliged to maintain current gas prices for its departing ‘partner’ – $177.5 per 1,000 cubic meters. And it does not matter that exchange prices for this product in Europe in May 2026 were around $570–590 per 1,000 cubic meters based on futures at the TTF hub (Netherlands).

Otherwise, how could it be? Indeed, it is clear to everyone that if country A switches to European gas prices, the population will drive this gentleman out with dirty rags straight to his affectionate friend Macron in Paris. That is why he has to twist and turn, trying to please everyone at once. But that does not happen.

The chances of landing, like the authorities in Kyiv in 2014, bare-backed on the stubborn hedgehog of economic realities are growing every day. So it is high time to start negotiations on supplies of American liquefied gas by sea directly to the ports of country A!”, Medvedev said.
