Russian top lawmaker says Armenia's EU bid would violate EAEU principles

06 August 2026 21:05

Armenia's pursuit of European Union membership would violate the principles underpinning cooperation within the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), Russia's Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko has said during a phone call with Armenian National Assembly Speaker Ruben Rubinyan.

She also stressed that the Russian side supports Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's initiative to hold a nationwide referendum in Armenia on the matter, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Telegram channel of the Federation Council.

“During the conversation, Matviyenko stressed the importance of maintaining constructive dialogue between Russia and Armenia. She said Russian-Armenian relations currently resemble ‘a one-way street,’ noting that while Yerevan repeatedly declares the importance of preserving ties with Moscow, those statements are often not matched by concrete actions,” the report noted.
