Sanae Takaichi secures second term as Japan’s prime minister
Japan’s parliament officially reelected Sanae Takaichi as prime minister on February 18 following a decisive victory by the ruling coalition in the recent snap elections.
Prior to the special parliamentary session, the Japanese government resigned in accordance with the constitution, Caliber.Az reports via Japanese media.
Takaichi is expected to announce the new cabinet lineup, with most current ministers likely to retain their posts, including Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi, and Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama.
In the February 8 elections, Takaichi’s Liberal Democratic Party significantly increased its parliamentary presence, growing from 198 to 316 seats. The supportive Innovation Party also gained two seats, reaching 38.
The result marked the ruling coalition’s largest electoral success, while the opposition alliance of Komeito and the Constitutional Democratic Party suffered heavy losses, losing 118 seats and reducing their representation to 49.
