Serbia looks set to reintroduce mandatory military service
04 January 2024 15:40
Serbia's general staff has submitted an initiative to President Aleksandar Vucic to reintroduce military service, according to Defence Minister Milos Vucevic.
He said that the decision is dictated by the country's security assessments, Gazeta.ru reports citing N1 channel.
"We need to replenish the reserve. The armed forces have thirteen generations, there was no compulsory military service. For the sake of our security, we need recruits who will always be ready to defend the country," Vucevic said.
He went on to say that many European countries are tending to introduce compulsory military service. The ministry is proposing that the period of compulsory service should not exceed 4 months, Vucevic stressed.
