Serbia secures €2.7 billion deal for Rafale jets during Macron's visit

30 August 2024 17:19

On August 29, Serbia finalized a significant agreement with France's Dassault Aviation to acquire 12 Dassault Rafale fighter jets for €2.7 billion ($2.99 billion).

The deal was formalized during French President Emmanuel Macron’s official visit to Belgrade, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

The agreement includes a comprehensive auxiliary logistics package, spare engines, and parts.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic expressed his enthusiasm at a press conference, stating, “We are happy to become part of the Rafale club. Twelve brand-new aircraft will be owned by the Republic of Serbia. This is huge news and will contribute to a significant increase in the operational capabilities of our army. Thank you, President Macron, for allowing us to buy new Rafales. We believe it was not easy. We also believe in good cooperation between our armies in the future.”

Macron, who was honoured with the highest state accolades during his two-day visit, remarked on the strengthened ties between Serbia and France over the past five years.

“I would like to send a message of friendship from France to Serbia today with my presence and to say in the most decisive way that your country has a place in Europe, in the European Union,” he said.

He emphasized the mutual benefits of a strong and democratic Serbia and a robust, sovereign EU. “My message is simple: the European Union and its member countries need a strong and democratic Serbia, and Serbia needs a strong and sovereign European Union to defend its interests. Serbia has a place in the European Union, and it can play a very important role there, serving as an example and a catalyst for the entire Western Balkans region. We are ready to support all necessary efforts, both in the economy and in improving the rule of law and everyday life,” Macron added.

The agreement to purchase the Rafale jets was initially agreed upon in April, during President Vucic's visit to Paris and his meeting with Macron.

During his visit, Macron will also tour the Matica Srpska Gallery in Novi Sad, deliver a speech at the Forum on Youth and Artificial Intelligence, and unveil a plaque marking the completion of the modernization of Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport.
