Shark attack at Australian beach leaves one dead, one critically injured
A shark attack at Crowdy Bay National Park, more than 300 km north of Sydney, has killed a 20-year-old woman and left a male companion of the same age critically injured.
The incident occurred early in the morning local time, Caliber.Az reports per BBC.
Witnesses provided first aid, with one managing to apply a tourniquet to the man’s injured leg, which doctors said saved his life. He was airlifted to a hospital in Newcastle with severe injuries.
Authorities have closed Kylies Beach at Crowdy Bay and several nearby swimming areas. Fisheries services deployed special bait in the area to catch and identify the shark.
This marks the fifth fatal shark attack in Australia this year.
The latest incident occurred under three months ago, when a man was fatally attacked by a shark on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.
Experts note that since 1791, the country has recorded over 1,280 shark incidents, more than 250 of which were fatal, with great white, tiger, and bull sharks being the most frequent attackers.
