Slovak PM warns Germany against war with Russia after election defeat

07 September 2026 17:33

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has expressed hope that Germany’s government will not consider war with Russia as a way to divert public attention from the ruling parties’ defeat in the Saxony-Anhalt regional election.

“I will express just one wish: that this result in the German regional elections does not lead to [a proposal by Germany’s political leadership] for war with Russia as the only way to disguise the defeat of the ruling parties,” Fico wrote on Facebook. “Germany does not make small mistakes.”

Fico said the Alternative for Germany’s (AfD) victory in Saxony-Anhalt should be assessed objectively, describing it as the sovereign choice of voters.

“This is a sovereign decision by voters in a sovereign country. Therefore, the election results should not be interpreted as the end of democracy or as something terrible,” he wrote.

The Slovak prime minister attributed the election outcome in part to dissatisfaction with the policies of Germany’s governing parties.

“Overall [it has been confirmed] that if ruling parties fail in [implementing policies in the area of] illegal migration, act belligerently, support wars and refuse to acknowledge the threatening consequences of European climate policy for the competitiveness of [EU member states], they lose,” Fico said.

“They are replaced by other parties that often offer simple, but nevertheless [effective] solutions,” he added.
