Slovenia backs Azerbaijan-Armenia peace efforts, calls for continued diplomatic momentum
Slovenian Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon, during her official visit to Baku, reaffirmed her country’s support for the ongoing peace negotiations between Azerbaijan and Armenia, emphasizing the importance of seizing the current geopolitical moment to achieve lasting stability in the South Caucasus.
In her remarks at a joint press conference with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, Fajon stated that the primary purpose of her visit to both Azerbaijan and Armenia was to gain a deeper understanding of the peace process and the progress made on the draft peace treaty, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
“The purpose of my visit is to get valuable information, familiarise myself with the ongoing peace process, learn more about the draft peace treaty,” she said, highlighting the importance of direct engagement in regional diplomacy.
Fajon reiterated Slovenia’s consistent position on the South Caucasus, voicing her country's appreciation for the steps taken by Baku and Yerevan toward peace.
“We once again call on the parties to take steps to fully normalise relations. The South Caucasus really deserves peace. I think this is a good historic opportunity to achieve a result in the current geopolitical situation, given how many active armed conflicts there are in the world. We strongly welcome every effort, every initiative aimed at achieving peace,” she added.
In a show of diplomatic goodwill and to further deepen bilateral ties, Fajon extended a formal invitation to Minister Bayramov to visit Slovenia. The invitation, announced during the press conference, signals Ljubljana’s interest in strengthening political dialogue and supporting regional stability through active engagement.
Further emphasizing Slovenia’s commitment to peace in the South Caucasus, Fajon welcomed the recent finalization of the draft peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia, describing it as a positive milestone.
“Ljubljana hopes for the early signing of a peace agreement between Baku and Yerevan,” she stated, expressing optimism that both sides will seize the momentum to reach a historic accord.
