South Korea opens fire after North Korea’s third border violation
North Korean soldiers have again crossed the inter-Korean onshore border, after which the South Korean military opened warning fire.
This is the third border violation by the North Korean military during a month, Caliber.Az reports citing the foreign media.
The incident occurred on June 20. The North Korean soldiers crossed the demarcation line within the demilitarized zone in the central part of the border, and after warning shots returned to their side. The South Korean military said that perhaps, the border was crossed by accident.
Similar incidents occurred on June 9 and 18. In both cases, about 20-30 North Korean soldiers crossed the border and returned to their side after warning shots. The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff said that the North Korean military crossed the border unintentionally.
On June 9, South Korea claimed that North Korean soldiers had crossed the demilitarized zone, prompting its troops to fire warning shots.
The cross-border activity by North Korean soldiers also occurred when tensions between the divided Koreas are high due to reciprocal propaganda activities.
Pyongyang has sent trash balloons into the South, while Seoul has used loudspeakers and distributed anti-regime pamphlets along the border.
Koreas have been divided since the Korean War of the 1950s, which ended in an armistice rather than a cease-fire.
Along the border, the two Koreas are separated by a demilitarized zone.
