Suspect in shooting of Russian police officers detained in Orenburg region

A man suspected of killing one police officer and injuring three others during an armed confrontation in Russia’s Orenburg region has been detained, according to local media reports.

Sergey Basalaev, 52, was arrested on 17 April near the village of Beloshapki, approximately one kilometre from a local cemetery. The detention followed a manhunt launched after the deadly incident on 16 April.

According to reports by the Baza media outlet, Basalaev had earlier abandoned his truck in Beloshapki, located about 15 kilometres from Akkermanovka, where the confrontation with law enforcement took place. Police had reportedly arrived in the area to detain him when he opened fire, killing one officer and injuring three others.
