Sweden names Russia as primary security threat in new government strategy
Sweden's government has identified Russia as the greatest security threat to the country until 2030.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, Defence Minister Pål Jonson, and National Security Adviser Henrik Landerholm presented a new national strategy at a press conference in Stockholm, Caliber.Az reports citing foreign media.
"Russia poses the most significant and serious threat to our national security," stated Jonson.
Despite significant losses in Ukraine, Moscow retains substantial military strength, as outlined in the new strategy.
"Russia exhibits a low threshold for the use of military force, is willing to take substantial political and military risks, and has expressed ambitious goals for its military buildup," Jonson elaborated.
In addition to Russia, the strategy highlighted other "authoritarian" states such as China, which are enhancing their influence and challenging the established world order.
"We observe that China is undergoing extensive military modernization that affects regional stability in the Indo-Pacific region," noted the defence minister.
The strategy also identified organized crime, violent extremism, and the potentially destabilizing impact of large-scale migration flows as additional threats to Sweden's security.
"This complex security situation requires our careful attention," Jonson emphasized, noting that the deteriorating security environment is expected to persist and may worsen in the future.
