Syrian government and Druze community in As-Suwayda reach security agreement

02 May 2025 11:37

Prominent local figures and authorities from Syria’s southern province of As-Suwayda—home to a majority Druze population—have issued a joint declaration reaffirming their commitment to the principles of Syrian national unity and identity.

The statement also emphasised the shared goal of restoring stability and security in the region following a period of heightened tensions.

As reported by Syria.tv, the declaration included a clear call to the Syrian government to assume responsibility for ensuring the safety of the critical road connecting As-Suwayda with the capital, Damascus, per Caliber.Az.

The signatories stressed that securing this route is a fundamental duty of the state and called for comprehensive security measures to be implemented throughout Syrian territory to protect civilians and promote stability.

The statement also highlighted the need to strengthen the role of the Ministry of Interior and the judicial police within As-Suwayda. However, it stipulated that the implementation of these functions should be led by the local population, ensuring community involvement in law enforcement and governance.

In parallel developments, the Syrian government and senior representatives from Jaramana, a city located in the suburbs of Damascus, reached a formal agreement to defuse recent tensions that had resulted in deaths and injuries. The agreement was built on a roadmap that outlines four central points aimed at preventing further escalation and restoring calm.

The accord was the outcome of a meeting that brought together a number of political and community leaders. Attendees included Mohammad Ali Amer, the official representative of Eastern Ghouta and delegate of Damascus Governor Amer al-Sheikh, as well as Ahmad Tamma, the political affairs officer for the Damascus province. A number of respected sheikhs and community figures from Jaramana were also present, reflecting the broad local support for the agreement.

This deal marks a significant step toward easing recent unrest in the region and promoting cooperation between the government and local communities, particularly in areas with complex sectarian dynamics.
