TASS: BRICS may condemn US strikes on Iran in summit declaration
The BRICS countries are expected to adopt a joint declaration condemning the recent US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities at the upcoming summit in Rio de Janeiro on July 6–7, a Brazilian government source told TASS.
According to the official, the member states were preparing a statement that would firmly denounce the US actions and call for peace, noting that Iran had not initiated the conflict with the United States or Israel, Caliber.Az reports.
The source stressed that Iran, as a full member of BRICS, deserved a united response from the group to what was described as a threat to the association.
The Brazilian representative also underlined that Iran was regarded by Brazil as a key state in efforts to strengthen cooperation between the Global South and the BRICS community.
US President Donald Trump had earlier announced that American forces had carried out successful strikes on three nuclear sites in Iran — Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan — and urged Tehran to take steps to end the conflict.
Meanwhile, the escalating Middle East tensions involving Israel, the United States, and Iran are not on the formal agenda of this week’s NATO summit in The Hague, according to Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz.
He told TVP Info that the conflict would likely be addressed informally during the summit dinner or in sideline discussions, since NATO as an organisation was not directly involved in the situation.
