Teenager in coma after alleged abuse at Russian rehabilitation facility photo

More than 20 teenagers were reportedly beaten and held captive at a rehabilitation centre in the Moscow region, with one boy currently in a coma.

According to Baza, the incidents took place in Dedovsk, near the city of Istra, at the rehab centre run by Anna Khobotova.

From August to November 2025, 29-year-old administrator Vitaly Balabrikov and his colleagues operated the illegal centre for troubled teens. Investigators reported that 24 children, all undergoing treatment for addiction, were admitted to the facility. While psychologists were officially supposed to provide therapeutic support, the children were allegedly subjected to brutal beatings and torture instead.

One 16-year-old boy was hospitalised in critical condition following these so-called “educational” measures. Doctors documented multiple bruises, abrasions, and evidence of being tied up. The boy is now in a coma, and medical staff reported the case to law enforcement authorities.

The Moscow Region Investigative Committee has identified administrator Vitaly Balabrikov and an 18-year-old female ward who reportedly participated in the abuse. Balabrikov has been arrested, while authorities are determining a preventive measure for the girl. A criminal case has been opened under charges of intentional infliction of grievous bodily harm, torture, and unlawful deprivation of liberty.

Anna Khobotova’s centre is officially known for helping troubled children, offering programs for substance abuse, teenage alcoholism, gambling addiction, and behavioural issues. However, the recent revelations have cast serious doubt on the institution’s operations.
