Tehran says US agrees to respect Iran’s sovereignty under new deal framework
The United States and Iran have agreed under a memorandum of understanding to respect each other’s sovereignty and refrain from interfering in internal affairs, according to Iranian officials.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the agreement establishes “a fully reciprocal basis” for relations between the two countries, including a commitment not to intervene in domestic matters, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
Speaking on Iranian state television, Araghchi said: “The United States and Iran undertake to respect each other’s sovereignty and not to interfere in each other’s internal affairs, on a fully equal basis.”
He also suggested that the broader understanding linked diplomatic progress with regional developments, stating that an element of the deal would involve an end to Israel’s military operations against Lebanon.
“We will not leave Lebanon alone,” he added.
Earlier, Araghchi said Iran and the United States are “one step away” from finalising a memorandum that could help resolve the current conflict.
“The Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding has never been closer. Pending its finalisation, the media should refrain from entering speculation about its content,” Araghchi wrote.
