The police suspect the explosion may have been triggered by a gas leak from a pipe damaged during work to construct the foundation of a building.
The injured, who range in age from their 20s to their 70s, include construction workers as well as residents of nearby apartment buildings. Several of the victims were treated for sore throats and respiratory discomfort caused by smoke inhalation, though no life-threatening injuries were reported.
The explosion caused structural damage to surrounding buildings, shattering windows and damaging metal shutters. Authorities have cordoned off the area as forensic teams and fire investigators assess the extent of the damage and work to determine the exact sequence of events that led to the blast.
Local residents described the moment of the explosion with shock and alarm.
A woman in her 50s who lives in the area said she saw black smoke rising after she heard what sounded like thunder.
