Tenth Summit of Organisation of Turkic States to kick off in Kazakhstan Under “Turkic Era” motto

02 November 2023 17:44

The 10th Summit of the Organisation of Turkic States will kick off in the capital of Kazakhstan, Astana, on November 3.

The event will be held under the motto “Turkic Era”, according to Anadolu.

Along with President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, President of Türkiye Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov and President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev will attend the summit.

Chairman of Turkmenistan’s Halk Maslahaty (People's Council, one of the houses of parliament) Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban were invited to the summit as leaders of observer countries.

The Astana Act and the Astana Declaration are expected to be signed at the summit, and a number of important decisions in economics, trade, transport, customs, finance, education, tourism, culture, etc. are expected to be made.

Deputy Secretary General of the Organisation of Turkic States Omer Kocaman, in an interview with Anadolu, noted the importance of the upcoming summit and the decisions that will be made at it.

He noted that important steps will be taken at the forum towards the integration of the Turkic world.

“Intensification of cooperation in the Turkic world is facilitated by the current international situation,” Kocaman said.

In particular, he emphasised the need to intensify cooperation among the member states of the Organisation of Turkic States in defence and security.

He said that a decision on the creation of a common mechanism for civil protection of the member states of the Organisation of Turkic States is planned to be made at the summit.

“Both humanitarian and political crises intensify in the world. Earthquakes can be cited as an example. We are working on creating such a mechanism to establish cooperation in case of natural disasters,” Kocaman noted.

He added that another important aspect is to increase trade volumes within the Organisation of Turkic States.

“The trade turnover volume within the Organisation of Turkic States exceeded approximately $40 billion. Increasing this indicator is currently one of the most important issues for us. The Turkic Investment Fund plays a very important role for the development of cooperation in this sphere,” he said.

He noted that the Organisation of Turkic States expects Turkmenistan to join the community as a full member.

Kocaman also stressed that the activity of Hungary and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus as observers in the Organisation of Turkic States contributed to the organisation’s further strengthening.
