Thai vessel drifts into Iranian waters, crew rescue underway
A Thai cargo vessel, Mayuree Naree, drifted from Omani waters into Iranian waters, prompting coordination with Thailand’s Foreign Ministry to ensure the safety of the three remaining Thai sailors on board, The Nation reported, citing Admiral Phairot Fuangchan, head of the Royal Thai Navy.
According to Admiral Fuangchan, on March 15, the Royal Thai Navy received information from the Royal Navy of Oman that the vessel had left Omani territorial waters. Thailand’s Foreign Ministry is negotiating with Iranian authorities to secure the remaining crew members.
Oman has stated it is ready to resume monitoring if the vessel returns to its waters.
The Thai Navy also issued notices to the Thai Shipowners’ Association highlighting current maritime risks, including conflict zones, sea mines, and potential satellite signal jamming.
So far, 20 of the 23 Thai crew members have been rescued and safely brought ashore during operations coordinated with Oman. The Royal Thai Navy continues to monitor the situation and coordinate efforts with partners, including Oman and the UAE.
