The Telegraph: Russia builds network of secret bases for long-range drones

17 August 2026 10:33

Russia has deployed a network of secret bases equipped with new launch sites for advanced long-range drones capable of reaching NATO countries. Some of these bases are being used to launch strikes against Ukraine, The Telegraph reports.

Based on documents and satellite imagery, journalists identified at least 10 Russian bases where new launch sites have been established.

In total, at least 59 new launch rails have been identified along Russia’s borders with Belarus and Ukraine.

According to the publication, some drone control centres have been converted from military bases and civilian airports, while other launch sites have been established in rural areas.

An analysis of satellite imagery by DroneSec showed that around 20 of the new rails are likely longer than standard launch rails. This could indicate that they are capable of launching Russia’s newest drones for long-range strikes.

The Telegraph notes that the new network of bases poses a long-term threat to NATO countries. Some of the sites are positioned in a way that would allow advanced Russian drones to reach Warsaw. At the same time, the publication emphasises that there are no signs that Russia is planning an attack on Poland.

European and US intelligence officials believe Moscow is considering the possibility of an armed provocation on Polish territory, missile or drone attacks against critical infrastructure, or false-flag operations, according to the report.

The investigation also notes that satellite imagery shows a significant increase in the number of advanced Russian drones. One of the bases has enough space to simultaneously store more than 1,000 drones, while additional launch installations are also being constructed at several key sites.
