Thousands evacuated as wildfire rages across Italy
More than 3,500 residents have been evacuated in Italy as a fast-moving forest fire continues to burn across parts of Italy's Tuscany region between the cities of Pisa and Lucca.
The blaze has heavily affected the area around Monte Faeta, particularly in the municipality of San Giuliano Terme, where conditions deteriorated overnight, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
On the evening of April 30, local authorities ordered a full evacuation of the affected zone, converting gymnasiums and public facilities into temporary shelters for displaced residents.
The region surrounding Monte Faeta, located just outside Pisa, is a popular destination for tourists and hikers, adding to concerns over safety and access during the ongoing emergency.
Regional President Eugenio Giani described the situation as “very difficult.”
Firefighters, supported by dozens of emergency personnel, have been deployed alongside military units to assist in containment efforts. Aerial firefighting operations involving aircraft and helicopters are also underway.
Authorities said strong winds have significantly complicated efforts to control the blaze, which began several days ago and has continued to spread despite sustained intervention.
Emergency services remain on site as efforts continue to prevent further expansion of the fire and ensure the safety of nearby communities.
