Trump dismisses concern over Iran’s “buried” uranium
US President Donald Trump said he is unconcerned about the return of enriched uranium from Iran because it is buried deep underground.
“That's so far underground, I don't care about that,” Trump told Reuters in a phone interview. “We'll always be watching it by satellite.”
Last week, Trump told CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins that “We want no enrichment, but we also want the enriched uranium.”
When asked how the United States would obtain enriched uranium, Trump said that it was very simple and that if a deal were made with Iran, the US would take it all itself.
The president has occasionally pointed to Iran’s stockpiles of enriched uranium as part of his shifting justification for the war, and recent reports suggest he has contemplated deploying US troops to seize them.
However, nuclear weapons experts say the way Trump and his chief negotiator discuss uranium enrichment casts doubt on their grasp of the technical details.
