Trump expresses disappointment with Putin, vows to drive down oil prices
U.S. President Donald Trump has once again voiced his frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the lack of progress in negotiations, pledging to lower global oil prices as a means to “automatically” bring an end to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
“We worked hard. And now we are doing twice as much as anyone else. And we are really bringing prices down. We want this to automatically stop the war between Russia and Ukraine. If prices drop a little more, it will stop it. I am very disappointed in President Putin,” Trump said, Caliber.Az reports per Ukrainian media.
Earlier this week, during a joint press conference with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Trump admitted that he had initially believed his personal relationship with Putin would help quickly resolve the conflict in Ukraine, but said the Russian leader had let him down.
Trump has repeatedly argued that energy markets hold the key to pressuring Russia, pointing to Moscow’s heavy dependence on oil and gas revenues. Since his return to office in January 2025, Trump has pursued a strategy of boosting U.S. energy production while pressing allies in Europe to diversify away from Russian energy supplies.
