Trump says gunman may have targeted him in Washington shooting
US President Donald Trump has said that the gunman who opened fire at a White House Correspondents’ Association event in Washington may have been targeting him.
Speaking at a press conference following the incident, Trump said the attacker was likely carrying multiple weapons and probably acted alone.
“When you do things like that, you become a target. If I wasn't doing that, I guess I'd be a lot less of a target,” Trump said, referring to what he described as a repeated attempt on his life.
He also stated that a police officer injured during the incident is in excellent condition, adding that the suspect attacked security personnel at a checkpoint.
During the briefing, Trump expressed doubts about any connection between the shooting and US military operations in Iran, saying the incident would not affect what he described as an American “path to victory” in its confrontation with the Islamic Republic.
Separately, Trump posted on his Truth Social platform images of the detained suspect as well as footage from the moment of the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ dinner in Washington.
