Turkish FM: Changes to Jerusalem's identity and status "unacceptable"

10 February 2025 10:46

Türkiye's Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan reaffirmed the country's steadfast position on key issues, including the situation in Jerusalem, and condemned US President Trump's suggestion that Palestinians in Gaza should relocate to other countries as "unacceptable."

"The games being played here, particularly the complete Judaization of Jerusalem, stripping it of its international identity, its Muslim identity, its Christian identity, and imposing a monoreligious approach, are, of course, unacceptable," Fidan stated, Caliber.Az reports via Turkish media.

He went on to say, "We do not believe such proposals should be taken seriously. It shows a lack of knowledge and understanding of history."

Fidan reiterated that the Islamic world, Türkiye, the Arab world, and the overwhelming majority of the international community support the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

On the topic of a potential ceasefire in Gaza and the possibility of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu launching further attacks on Gaza, Fidan acknowledged that this remains a concern, but expressed hope it would not come to pass.

He reminded that Egypt, Qatar, and the United States are guarantors of the ceasefire agreement and stressed that the US must ensure Israel adheres to its terms.

"If Netanyahu begins a new war with American support, America’s credibility, which has already hit rock bottom, will sink even further. This imbalance in the international system will perpetuate the crisis," he warned.

Responding to Netanyahu's comments about working with Trump to "draw a new map of the Middle East," Fidan dismissed such plans as futile. "The peoples of the Middle East are honourable, and they have seen similar 'problematic' projects many times before. These ideas have always ended up in the 'dustbin' of history," he said.

Fidan concluded by emphasizing that while such figures may wield influence for a time, ultimately, they will be "buried in the dustbin of history." He expressed confidence that the peoples of the region will ultimately overcome these proposals in the long run.
