Turkish FM: Genocide occurring in Palestine as global powers stand by

15 October 2024 21:10

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has asserted that the current international system is intentionally failing to stop the genocide in the Gaza Strip, leaving the Arab community and opponents of the situation in the West feeling powerless.

This statement was made during the Future of Palestine Conference organized by Türkiye's ruling Justice and Development Party in Ankara, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

"Genocide is occurring in Palestine, and the global system is not intervening deliberately. This does not imply that most people in the West view the situation as acceptable. We have numerous friends in Western countries, including the U.S. and Europe. We understand they disapprove and wish to halt it. However, the structure of the global system prevents effective intervention, allowing the genocide to persist and leaving its opponents looking helpless. The Arab community has also found itself ineffective, hopeless, and powerless in addressing this tragedy," Fidan stated.

The Foreign Minister emphasized that Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan consistently highlights the necessity for reforming the United Nations Security Council.

"Decisions are made based on the strategic interests of the five permanent members of the Security Council, but this ultimately harms the entire world. Thousands are currently dying in Gaza and Ukraine, and we are witnessing fatalities in Africa and elsewhere. This is the fundamental issue with the current international system that must be addressed. Unfortunately, it will take time to resolve this problem, and we will continue to see similar crises," Fidan noted.

He further indicated that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, along with the spillover of violence into Lebanon and Syria, should not be viewed solely as a regional issue. "This is an international, global problem. The only viable solution for Palestine is the establishment of two equal sovereign states. The actions of [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu over the past 20 years have led to the neglect of the two-state solution. We have witnessed two wars in Gaza, are observing a third, and will see a fourth and beyond, potentially involving other nations if the issue is not resolved," Fidan remarked.

He underscored that "the two-state solution is crucial for the security of both Israel and Palestine," asserting that "all rights and security guarantees vital to Israel must equally extend to the Palestinian people."
