Turkish FM vows military action against YPG if it threatens Syria's new administration

08 January 2025 10:47

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has emphasized that the primary concern in Syria is the restoration of the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Fidan explained that during the rule of the Ba'ath regime, terrorist organizations, taking advantage of the power vacuum, seized control over parts of the country. These groups threaten Syria's unity and territorial integrity, which Türkiye deems unacceptable, Caliber.Az reports, citing Turkish media.

The Turkish Foreign Minister stated that in response, necessary measures would be taken against the YPG terrorist group.

“The necessary action is a military operation. They have seized foreign territories and oil-rich regions,” Fidan clarified.

He further added, “Now, there is a new master in Damascus. If the PKK/YPG acts against the new administration, the steps that must be taken are clear. The new Syrian administration must take the necessary measures against the PKK/YPG to ensure the regional and national integrity of the country. An ultimatum has been presented: foreign mercenaries must leave Syria, and the remaining militants must lay down their arms and cooperate with Damascus.”

According to Fidan, Damascus has communicated this position to the leaders of these organizations. He also made it clear that in the event of a threat from ISIS or other terrorist groups, Ankara is prepared to take responsibility for neutralizing them.

Fidan stressed that Türkiye does not hold a categorical hostility toward Syria, but he added, “The PKK/YPG is involved in terrorist activities. They admit it themselves. You gathered people from around the world and occupied foreign land. You receive funding by providing so-called 'prison services.' You’ve established such an order. One group of terrorists controls the others. This fundamentally contradicts international law and the laws of any state.”

Türkiye remains resolute in its stance against terrorism and is determined to take all necessary steps to protect Syria's territorial integrity and ensure the stability of the region.
