Turkish FM: Time to end IS, PKK terrorism once and for all

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has once again emphasised Türkiye's deep concern about the extensive presence of the PKK terrorist organisation in Syria, where the new administration is also prioritising the fight against armed groups.

In an interview with TRT World, Fidan stated, "I think not many people are aware that the PKK occupies one-third of Syria's territory and controls critical energy resources that are vital to the rest of the Syrian population", Caliber.Az reports.

Describing the PKK as an existential threat not only to Turkey but also to Kurds in Syria, Iraq, and Iran, Fidan stressed, "No country should have armed groups that do not answer to the central government."

He also highlighted the importance of regional responsibility in combating terrorism, including the potential resurgence of Islamic State (IS), warning that foreign intervention often leads to further complications.

"It is time to put an end to the terrorist activities of IS and the PKK," Fidan declared, calling for collective efforts to "eradicate this virus." 

Earlier, Fidan emphasised Türkiye’s commitment to assisting the Syrian people in rebuilding their nation and stabilizing the region. The foreign minister identified the eradication of terrorism in Syria as a primary focus for 2025.

“Clearing Syrian territory of terrorism will be the most significant task of the coming year. Türkiye is the most effective country in combating terrorism and is determined to succeed in this mission. This marks the end of the road for terrorist organizations in the region,” Fidan declared.

He reaffirmed Türkiye’s steadfast approach to counter-terrorism, stating, “We will continue our fight with the same determination, making no distinction between Daesh and the PKK. Terrorism has neither religion nor nationality. For terrorist organizations, there is no difference between Europe and America. "With the help of Allah, we will achieve our goal of making Türkiye free from terrorism."
