Turkish FM warns of “deadlock” in Ukraine peace process

08 June 2026 18:20

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has voiced concern over what he described as a growing “deadlock” in both the diplomatic efforts and military developments surrounding the war in Ukraine, stressing the need for continued dialogue and peace initiatives.

Fidan made the remarks following a trilateral meeting of the foreign ministers of Türkiye, Azerbaijan, and Georgia held in Istanbul, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.

Addressing the ongoing conflict, the Turkish foreign minister reaffirmed Ankara’s commitment to supporting diplomatic engagement as the preferred path toward a resolution.

“We will continue to support diplomacy and dialogue. The ongoing war to our north directly affects the security of our entire region,” Fidan said.

He emphasized that a peaceful settlement of the conflict remains essential for regional stability and security.

“We believe that achieving peace in the Russian-Ukrainian war is essential for the stability and security of our region,” he noted.

Fidan also underlined the importance of maintaining momentum in diplomatic efforts despite the challenges facing negotiations.

“We are convinced that the diplomatic process and peace efforts must continue with determination,” he said.

At the same time, the Turkish foreign minister acknowledged growing concerns over the lack of progress on both the battlefield and at the negotiating table.

“We are all watching with concern the current deadlock on the battlefield and in the diplomatic process,” Fidan added.

Türkiye has repeatedly positioned itself as a supporter of diplomatic solutions to the conflict and has hosted several rounds of talks aimed at facilitating dialogue between the parties.
