Turkish FM welcomes UK counterpart to office, sets diplomatic tone for bilateral ties
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan held a phone conversation with Yvette Cooper to congratulate her on her appointment as the United Kingdom’s new Foreign Secretary, Turkish Foreign Ministry sources confirmed.
During the call, the two top diplomats discussed the bilateral agenda between Türkiye and the UK, with a particular focus on scheduling upcoming high-level visits. The conversation also covered key areas of mutual interest, including trade, defence cooperation, and joint efforts in combating terrorism, Caliber.Az reports, citing Turkish media.
Fidan and Cooper exchanged views on pressing international issues, notably the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia. They also addressed the latest developments in the Middle East, underscoring the importance of coordinated diplomatic efforts in promoting regional stability.
Cooper recently assumed the role of Foreign Secretary following a Cabinet reshuffle that saw her predecessor, David Lammy, appointed as Deputy Prime Minister. Lammy stepped into the role after Angela Rayner resigned amid controversy linked to a housing purchase.
Rayner’s resignation came in the wake of an independent ethics investigation, which concluded that she had failed to pay the appropriate amount of stamp duty on a property acquired in May.
