Turkish MP: Azerbaijan's support for TRNC - good example for Turkic world
Statements by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in support of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus serve as an example for the Turkic countries of Central Asia, said Ayyüce Türkeş Taş, a member of the Turkish Parliament and deputy chair of the İYİ Party.
The MP also noted that the sincere meeting between the presidents of the two countries at the 6th Antalya Diplomacy Forum was a good example for the Turkic world, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
At the same time, she expressed regret that three members of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) — Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan — as well as observer Turkmenistan, have appointed ambassadors to the Republic of Cyprus:
“All our brotherly countries are independent, sovereign states and can pursue policies in line with their own interests. However, the fact that these countries are opening embassies in Southern Cyprus (the Greek-controlled part of the island), which considers the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus an occupier, is a concerning development. This should be analyzed in parallel with other events in the region, including developments in Syria, and considered as a whole.”
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has publicly expressed support for the international recognition of the TRNC. Speaking at the "Towards a New World Order" forum held at ADA University in Baku in April 2025, Aliyev stated, "We are always with our brothers… Our brothers in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus can rest assured that we will always support the recognition of their country as an independent state by the international community."
With support from Azerbaijan and Türkiye, the TRNC has attained observer status in the Organization of Turkic States (OTS). Azerbaijan continues to advocate for the TRNC's full membership, reinforcing its commitment to integrating the TRNC into regional frameworks.
