Türkiye buys additional fertilisers from Russia amid supply disruptions

08 April 2026 11:34

Türkiye has purchased extra fertiliser supplies from Russia due to disrupted supply chains caused by the situation in the Strait of Hormuz and is also negotiating with Algeria and Morocco, reports the Turkish newspaper Milliyet, citing government and industry sources.

The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has disrupted global fertiliser supply chains, cutting sales by nearly 40% and driving prices up. In response, Türkiye has supplemented its existing stocks with purchases from Russia and is engaging with North African suppliers. Current reserves are expected to last until autumn.

Türkiye’s annual fertiliser demand is around 7 million tonnes, with 5 million tonnes imported. To stabilise domestic prices, the government has suspended fertiliser exports and reduced customs duties on urea, nitrogen, and compound fertilisers to zero.

Globally, fertiliser production reaches nearly 200 million tonnes per year. The Persian Gulf region produces 16 million tonnes annually and serves as a key transit route for major producers, including China and India. Prices for urea rose from $482.50 to $720 per tonne between late February and mid-March, while domestic fertiliser prices in Türkiye climbed 30–50%.

Gökhan Uzunoğlu, head of the Turkish Association of Fertiliser Producers, Importers, and Exporters, said current reserves are sufficient until autumn, though rising prices are expected to increase costs for end products.
