Türkiye calls for military moratorium between Russia, Ukraine – FM

Türkiye has proposed a moratorium on military hostilities to Russia and Ukraine as part of efforts to establish a ceasefire mechanism requested by Kyiv, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said in an interview with Anadolu.

“We have already conveyed to the parties [to the conflict] a proposal for a moratorium [on military hostilities] and are awaiting a response on the matter,” Fidan stated.

The minister also said that several countries have expressed interest in the alliance between Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, which signed the Mecca Agreement on joint defense. He specifically named Egypt among the countries showing interest.

“Türkiye takes a similar strategic position regarding the Middle East, the Caucasus, the Mediterranean basin and Europe,” Fidan noted.

According to the Turkish foreign minister, by developing such cooperation, Türkiye is becoming the only NATO member with diplomatic influence across all regions of the world.

He pointed to developments in the South Caucasus as an example, noting that Azerbaijan and Armenia are moving toward a final peace agreement with Ankara supporting the process. “In such a case, prospects emerge in the fields of security and economy. Over time, there may also be a need to establish a similar agreement, a defense alliance, in the Caucasus,” the FM stressed.
