Türkiye coordinates passenger evacuation after Global Sumud Flotilla ship breaks down
The Johnny M, a vessel of the Global Sumud Flotilla carrying humanitarian aid for Gaza, experienced a technical malfunction early on Septemebr 29 in the Mediterranean Sea, prompting a distress call and a coordinated evacuation led by Turkish authorities.
The ship, situated between Crete, Cyprus, and Egypt, reported that its engine compartment was taking on water, raising concerns for the safety of its passengers. Those aboard hailed from several countries, including Luxembourg, France, Finland, Mexico, and Malaysia, according to Anadolu.
Responding swiftly, the Turkish Red Crescent and other agencies mobilised to assist the vessel. The ship Alma, captained by Semih Fener, arrived on the scene to aid the evacuation. Fener told Anadolu Agency, “There is no sunken ship, only a technical malfunction. We took 12 people from Johnny M and distributed them to other ships. Four passengers will return home via Türkiye.”
Fener added that the four individuals returning home expressed gratitude toward the Turkish Red Crescent and the Turkish authorities for their support during the evacuation.
The Global Sumud Flotilla, via its US-based social media channels, praised the Turkish government and Red Crescent for their rapid and effective coordination, which ensured a smooth evacuation operation. Officials noted that the incident would not cause significant delays, with the fleet still expected to reach its destination in Gaza within four days.
