Türkiye develops domestic engine for FIRTINA howitzers PHOTO
The Turkish company Navy POWER has announced the completion of work on the design of the UTKU power plant for FIRTINA self-propelled howitzers with a capacity of 1000 hp.
BBC POWER is continuing to work on the UTKU power plant for FIRTINA self-propelled howitzers. UTKU is a 1000 hp V8 engine with a transverse transmission that was developed under a contract with the Defense Industry Presidium, Caliber.Az cites SavunmaSanayiST.com as saying on its Twitter page.
It is planned that the engine and transmission, the design work of which has been completed and tested separately, will be combined within two months and tested as a "power group". It is assumed that UTKU, the development of which is ongoing, will be used in FIRTINA howitzers in 2025. This will overcome the embargo currently imposed on Türkiye in this area.
To date, about 10 prototypes of the UTKU engine, consisting of about 3,000 parts, have been manufactured. The UTKU engine, which has passed hundreds of hours of testing, will also be used on various tracked armoured platforms in addition to the FIRTINA howitzer.
The UTKU engine with a capacity of 1000 hp in the V8 design has a volume of 18.25 litres.
