Caliber.Az reports citing the source that Türkiye plans to develop and build its own nuclear submarine in the medium term. This will be possible due to the commissioning of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant.
Developments in the construction of this plant will provide invaluable experience for Turkish specialists and be a catalyst that will accelerate the country's entry into the club of powers that have nuclear submarines in their arsenals, according to a top Turkish Navy official.
At the moment, according to the military, the "prototype" of the Turkish nuclear submarine could be the French Barracuda nuclear submarine, which has several advantages. In particular, it has low observability, the ability to effectively detect targets in all conditions in automatic mode, and the thoughtful placement of personnel in living compartments, which allows men and women to serve on such submarines together.
It is proposed to arm Turkish nuclear submarines with high-precision ATMACA and Gezgin missiles, as well as the AKYA heavy torpedo.
Türkiye's forthcoming nuclear sub would put Türkiye alongside Russia, China, India, the USA, the UK and France.
